文法: “can do” “make her cry”
You must have come across (碰巧遇到) phrases (片语) like (像) “I can do it”, “he must strike back”, and “he made her cry”. For some of you, have you ever (从来) wonder (想知道) what grammatical (文法) category (归类) are those “verbs” (动词): “do”, “strike” and “cry”?
Surprise (惊讶)! Those are not verbs, but adverbs (副词) called “infinitives” (不定词) that look like verbs.
Infinitives usually start with the word “to”, e.g., “The job is hard to do.” This special class (特别种类) of infinitives without the word “to” is called “bare infinitives”.
