Young Mayor Runs Afoul of Human Flesh Search Engines
Just days after being appointed as mayor of Yicheng city in Hubei province, and being hailed in the media as “China’s youngest mayor,” 28-year-old Zhou Senfeng has fallen prey to China’s so-called human flesh search engines, online amateur sleuths who try to dig up personal details of people who somehow incur their wrath or distrust.
Zhou’s meteoric rise through the local government ranks since his graduation from Tsinghua University in 2004 has drawn many skeptics who doubted his qualifications and questioned his rapid promotion. In online forums, they have demanded more information about his family background, personal connections and the procedures involved in his appointment as mayor of Yicheng, a small city of 200,000.

Searchers haven’t found any political connections in his faily background, though it still seems, at times, that Zhou can do no right. Web users posted a photo of Zhou on a visit to a local farm that shows him standing with his hands behind his back as another person held an umbrella for him. This was juxtaposed with a photo of Premier Wen Jiabao walking in the rain, carrying his own umbrella for an unflattering comparison to the young mayor.
Zhou is also facing allegations of plagiarism, according to Chinese-language media reports. Web users dug up a 2004 essay that Zhou had written as part of his post-graduate studies at Tsinghua, “An Analysis of the Core Competitiveness of Real Estate Enterprises in the Value Chain,” that was published in an academic journal. One blogger noted several similarities to another article titled “On the Core Competitiveness of Real Estate Enterprises” that had been published in 2002, and singled out sections that appeared to be identical or nearly so.
Zhou Senfeng couldn’t be reached for comment, and the general office of Yicheng city didn’t respond to the Journal’s questions on this issue.

Some are calling for a thorough investigation: “Tsinghua University should immediately revoke his master’s degree!” said on user on Tianyan.cn, a popular online forum, “and the local government should suspend him from duty!”
However, many see it another example of the media sensationalism and the dangers of human flesh search engines run amok. “The media should do something more worthwhile. It’s not only about attracting eyeballs. Why not go and report on corruption cases? Why they must drive a 29-year-old to the wall?” said a Sina user. (Zhou, who was born in July 1980, is considered to be already 29 according to the Chinese method of calculating age).
Still, it appears that a majority of commenters hold that Zhou should explain himself and make a public apology. “Nobody can challenge him on his ability to be a mayor simply due to his age or family backgroud,” blogger Tao Duanfang wrote. However, “when it comes to the essay plagiarism scandal, Zhou Senfeng should come out and make a public explanation as soon as possible, since good faith is essential.”
