Being as a volunteer in NBA Fit Camp 2008

July 24 to 25, NBA Fit Camp 2008, in which basic basketball skills were taught to 12-18 years old kids by NBA stars and coaches, was held in our school, it can be counted as a big event in this summer vacation. This time, the visiting NBA star is Glen Rice, a retired NBA player who was a three-time NBA All-Star guard/forward, well known for his pinpoint shooting accuracy. And the coach is Rex Kalamian, Sacramento Kings’ current assistant coach.
I was lucky to be selected one of the volunteers in this camp after two rounds’ interview, and served as a team guide for 11 young players of 17-18 years old. Out of my first imagination, the players in our group are disciplined and well to get along with, in other words, they are easy to manage. According to my observation, two players of the first middle school of Shantou and one player of Dahao middle school in our group had great talents, had they not only skills and physical quality, but also basketball wisdom. I’ll bet that they will be basketball stars in their future university. Actually, my job was rather boring, most of time when the players received training from the coaches and practiced their basketball skills, I needed to stand on outside of the court and keep an eye on them. For some other volunteers, they were glad to see the NBA star and observe the training by NBA coaches, but I didn’t feel any excitement about them and ask for any autographs from Glen Rice or Kings’ assistant coach even I had several opportunities to do that. Glen Rice is a truly great 3-points shooter, he performed his shooting skill on the break of training, it was amazing that he could still consecutively goal many 3-point shot although he was retired and gained much weight. All players cheered Rice’s wonderful performance. Two days training passed quickly. At the end of training, players had a match to show off what they learned in these two days and examine their performance.
After the closing ceremony, young players were given a basketball as a gift and opportunity to ask their favorite NBA star and coach for autograph and taking pictures with them. To my surprise, some players in my group also asked me for autograph and taking photo with them. They said they wanted to keep good memories for this experience.
Say some things beyond the Camp, I found people in big cities had far more opportunities in many aspects than relatively small cities and rural areas, kids from rich families also had priority to opportunities compared to kids from poor families. Take this Camp for example, this Camp is only held in Jinan, Xi’an and Shantou (hometown of Li Ka Shing) this year and last year it was held in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shantou and Hohhot these kind of big city. For most relatively small cities, they won’t have such opportunity to organize such kind of activities considered to commercial operation. And I also found that most players in our group came from rich families although this Camp is totally free and through Online Registration. Some players’ parents have “guan xi”, so their kids can enter the Camp. It is disappointed that unfairness exists in every coroner of the society, even this kind of non-profit activities.
