Prof. Li Fei Talked about Cross-strait Relations after the Taiwan Election
Xiamen University, vice director of the Taiwan Research Center Prof. Li Fei visited Shantou University again. On May 8,2008, he gave a lecture on Taiwan situation and the trend of cross-strait relations after the Taiwan 2008 election in Science Hall, which attracted a lot of STU teachers and students.
In the lecture, Prof. Li introduced the methodology on how to recognize the Taiwan issue, and pointed out that Taiwan issue had its historical root, which required us to recognize it historically, comprehensively and objectively and find the answer for it with a historical point of view; we should respect the way of life of the Taiwan compatriots and their desire of mastering their own life, and understand Taiwan from various angles. The development pattern of cross-strait relation is the result of interaction of various forces. With regard to this development pattern, Prof. Li made a clear and concise basic judgement, concluded as the "independence can not be allowed, reunification can not be radical, dilatoriness can not be afraid". As to the strategy of dealing with cross-strait relation, Prof. Li said that the history told us that we can employ kindness and severity together, kindness prior to severity. At last, he winded up his wonderful speech with four words “strength, reasoning, courtesy and benefit”---strength means the comprehensive national strength; reasoning means persuading through reasoning; courtesy means treating Taiwan with courtesy; benefit means basing on mutual benefit to promote communication, and then communication promotes trust---to generalize the key principles to solve the Taiwan issue
After the speech, the audience asked Prof. Li questions and also presented their own opinions toward Taiwan issues. Thank for this lecture, our teachers and students had a better understanding of the cross-strait issues after the election.
