ABOUT SINGAPORE
Singapore is a thriving independent city-state located just off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. Since gaining independence from Malaysia in 1965, it has risen to become the business and financial center of Southeast Asia. Singapore's recent history is marked by rapid economic development, the likes of which have not been seen or experienced by any other city-state in the world. In addition to international banking, its major industries include shipping and shipbuilding, electronics, petroleum and oil refining. It has also become a major tourist destination for people throughout the region and beyond.
The current population of Singapore is approximately 3.5 million people, 76% of whom are ethnically Chinese, 15% Malay and 6% Indian. Reflecting the cultural diversity is a similar diversity of religious belief and practice including Buddhists, Muslims, Christians and Hindus among others.
Singapore occupies approximately 620 square kilometers of land, most of which is made up of one island which bears the same name. Two causeways in the north and west link the island with peninsular Malaysia across the Johor Straits.
The major languages spoken in Singapore include English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil, however various dialects of Chinese can be heard everywhere as can "Singlish," Singaporeans' own unique version of English which has been described by some as a dialect in and of itself and which combines shortened or cropped forms of English words and expressions with Malay words and Chinese endings. Just type Singlish to any search engine for examples. Singaporeans also tend to take the use of the acronym to entirely new levels, seemingly able to break down the names of almost all places, institutions, positions, departments and concepts into two- or three-letter form. For example, Singapore's highways are all identified by TLAs (three letter acronyms): PIA (Pan-Island Expressway), BKE (Bukit Timah Expressway), KJE (Kranji Expressway), AYE (Ayer Rajah Expressway), ECP (East Coast Parkway), TPE (Tampines Expressway) and CTE (Central Expressway). However, communication should pose no serious problems for anyone who can speak English as it is widely spoken, albeit in varying degrees, and is the language of instruction in most educational institutions and the official language of government and business.
The weather never changes. This may not be entirely true as many locals will assure you, and the temperature does tend to drop slightly during the rainy season which falls between November and January. However, with daytime highs ranging only between about 30 and 33°C throughout the year and with high humidity levels, it remains sufficiently hot and muggy for most people's taste year-round. Add to this the fact that the necessity of air-conditioning makes indoor temperatures feel frigid by comparison and the unavoidable need for most people to pass constantly between the two extremes, and the result is that Singapore feels moderately uncomfortable at best. Evenings however usually provide relief and can be quite pleasant, especially when it's breezy.
Singapore features world class dining, shopping, hotels, parks, gardens and entertainment among its many attractions. However, in recent years it has earned the dubious distinction but rather unfounded reputation of offering its visitors only two alternatives, eating and shopping. And indeed if you confine yourself to the Orchard Road area and the center of town in general where most of the major hotels, restaurants and department stores are located, you may tend to agree. Starbucks, HMV, Outback Steakhouse, Nike and high-priced Japanese department stores are to be found in abundance there. Be sure to bring along plenty of spare cash and your credit card for a good time. Some westerners seeking a glimpse of "exotic Asia" are often therefore disappointed for this very reason. However, if you're willing to venture out of the center of town, dig just a bit deeper and look in the right places, you will certainly find that Singapore has some much more lively, colorful, fascinating, and yes, perhaps even exotic things to offer. Places like Little India, Chinatown and Arab Street, to name just a few of the more highly publicized ones, with their temples, mosques, traditional shop houses and architecture, and food stalls provide a sense of the past and a feel for the diversity that characterizes modern-day Singapore.
Singapore may not be every bit as clean and orderly as many people believe, but it certainly is every bit as safe. You can walk around alone at night and feel safe, which is hardly a claim you can probably make back home. This is not to say that crime doesn't exist, as is popularized by the anti-crime slogan "Low crime doesn't mean no crime" - it's just rare. But... there's one precaution to take seriously - petty theft of articles left out in the open. Examples which can be described first- or second-hand among the expat community are a handbag in a shopping cart, a handphone on a countertop, unattended laptop computers on tables, backpacks in a chair, cashcards, and an unlocked bicycle. It seems that breaking in (e.g. breaking glass, doors, locks, etc.), although it exists, is less common than the lifting of open and unattended articles. Do not leave belongings unattended, or keep them hidden to avoid temptation.
Efficiency in Singapore is world renowned, but there is a caveat. When trying to do something systems are set up to handle, i.e. a "normal" thing, you will find the system pleasantly efficient. When trying to do something unusual, you will likely receive "cannot". This may be the result of someone unsure whether it can be done, or unwilling to take the risk of being blamed if it shouldn't be done in the way you ask, hence the safest answer "cannot". Likewise, customer relations may seem abrupt here. A favorite response it seems to a customer complaint is to blame the customer - if the customer had done it right, the problem would never have occurred. If you receive "cannot", or blame, politely wait until the rebuttal is done, then repeat your request without arguing back, and eventually you might see a lightening up, and help. Or else you'll just have to try somewhere else.

当然半夜的时候会偷睡一阵子，因为那时主管自己也躲到哪个角落偷睡去了。上班的时间太长了，所以经常是早上出发的时候是星星，晚上回来的时候还是星星。有一阵子加班特别多，每天都是16个小时（只要不超出16小时是不违反政府法律的），所以脑袋整天晕得特别厉害，象得了瘟病一样，几乎啥想法都没有，就是想睡。这点令我留下了刻骨铭心的映象。许多生产一线的员工也都如此（基本上都是来自中国、马来及印度），喝茶时间（15分钟）只要往哪个角落的地板上一坐就睡着了，连上班都要人叫醒。

加班美其名曰“自愿”，但如果你经常拒绝加班的话，主管自然而然会有办法整你，这点你不用担心。相反，员工大多是巴结主管，巴不得多加些班（哪怕累得已不成人样了），因为要赚钱啊。普通员工的底薪是600新币每月，女工才500，我是技术员工，七百多，满加班的时候可以拿到两千新币一个月，但大多时候也就是1200上下。新币与人民币之间的汇率是4.9-5之间。象我正常一个月所有的消费是700新币左右。那里的工厂普遍实行管工制度，管工经常在生产线上盯着员工干活，看谁不顺眼就破口大骂，骂得你比狗屎还不如。

你敢拍桌子走人吗？不敢！因为谁都知道中国人是借了大笔的债务过去打工的，走了就无法偿还债务，再说吵架弄不好会惊动警方，而那里的警察处理方式基本上都是首先保护他们的本国人！有一次一位女工被骂得实在受不了，居然服药自杀，还好送到医院抢救回来了。而工厂的老板还特别器重这些敢骂敢抓的管工，因为生产效益是他们抓出来的啦，厂里的工程师地位根本不如他们。

新加坡本来就是马来西亚的一个岛，所以这里有非常多的马来人，分为马来本地人及马来华人，从中国刚过去的，尤其是普通打工的，大多受到他们的排斥，因为是在与他们抢饭碗啊，更何况华人在海外历来地位就低。许多马来当地人及印尼人相当的排华，中国同厂的员工互斗时可能在表面上还会维护一层假假的礼貌，而他们往往是赤裸裸的仇视你，要不是新加坡法律严的话可能经常都会动刀子打架，这不是说假的，因为这种事情还不时地发生一两起。

在那边基本上都要自己租房子住。如果有的读者以后要去那儿，千万别租马来人的房子，否则十有八九都要落入圈套，尽管你有签合同要收据什么的，或许还有中介公司当证人，都没用，他们往往是一伙的，到时宰你没商量，你跟他闹到政府去？你根本玩不起，别忘了在那儿你是低人一等的外国人（当然如果你是老美之类的就例外了）。这种事发生在本人身上及听到的不少于十起！

有一回我的一位工友在上班时不小心伤着了眼睛，伤得有点厉害，工厂让她到医院看过两次之后就再也没有支付任何的医疗费。因为是较严重的工伤，劳工部有写过几次信给她，可她居然只接到一封，她拿信时工厂人事部的人对她说“那信你就别拿了吧，你看不懂英文的...”（其它的几封据说都是人事部的人藏走了），拿回来后我帮她翻译，原来是劳工部其中一个部门写的，大意是问工伤好转得怎样，医院有没有确认康复，厂方有没有报销医疗费，是否需要劳工部的帮助等等。这位工友的伤口没全好，又怕厂方报复，所以一直没敢请假去作进一步治疗，

几个月之后这位工友终于鼓起勇气想作进一步治疗，于是来到了劳工部询问该怎么操作，接待我们的那位中年妇女回答得有一句没一句的，大概是说怎么拖了这么久的时间（才来处理），只有医生肯出示没有康复的证明他们才有可能要求厂方支付更多的医疗费，否则他们也帮不上忙，首先要自己支付医疗费请假去检查等等，(我觉得这个劳工部是写信的归写信的，处事的归处事的)，这位工友哪有钱支付昂贵的医疗费？而且处处不懂英文，没法，后面气得只好辞职回国了，走时眼球上还带着几条明显的血丝，还经常隐隐作痛。
